Go Ahead Eagles and Melvin Boel are parting ways. After a thorough evaluation, it has become clear that the partnership between the coach and the club is no longer sustainable. Boel had a contract with the club until mid-2028. RTV Oost knows that Joseph Oosting is the top candidate to replace him. The 39-year-old Rotterdammer was given the difficult task of following up on the dream season under Paul Simonis last summer. Go Ahead secured two massive victories in the Europa League against Panathinaikos and Aston Villa, but the European campaign also cost them valuable points in the league. This led to growing discontent among the fans. After a draw against FC Volendam in February, the unrest reached a peak. Go Ahead Eagles had not won in months at that point. Upon their return to Deventer, the team bus was met with a chorus of boos, calling for Boel's departure. The coach showed his determination and received long-term support from the club's management. General director Jan Willem van Dop remained publicly behind his coach, but made it clear in an interview with De Oosttribune in March that there would be a thorough evaluation of the technical staff after the season. "I feel that the entire staff is not at the level we expect. This will be evaluated. We need to determine what needs to change." The conclusion of the evaluation is harsh. Despite a 12th-place finish in the Eredivisie and a European adventure that will be etched in the memories of the fans forever, Go Ahead Eagles sees no basis to continue with Boel, whose contract still had two years to run. Director Jan Willem van Dop on Boel's departure: “Since his arrival, Melvin has made a valuable contribution to the development of Go Ahead Eagles. He has played a crucial role in the club's further professionalization. Therefore, this is not an easy decision for us. Melvin has been committed to the development of both players and staff from day one. Thanks to his efforts, we have been able to achieve historic successes in the past season." “At the same time, we have come to the conclusion that both the club and Melvin are entering a new phase. Sometimes, the further development of an organization requires a different course, no matter how difficult that choice may be. Although the results achieved are satisfactory, it has become clear that the collaboration ultimately did not fully meet the expectations of both parties beforehand. This does not diminish the respect and appreciation we have for Melvin,” he concludes.
